Trump Meets US-Backed Venezuelan Leader Amid Ongoing Political Turmoil

Former President Donald Trump met with Juan Guaidó, the opposition figure recognized by the United States as Venezuela’s interim president, in a meeting held on Thursday in Washington. The encounter marks the first time Trump has spoken with Guaidó since the socialist government of Nicolás Maduro seized power in 2013.

Guaidó, who was handpicked by Trump in 2019 as the U.S.-backed alternative to Maduro, was arrested by Venezuelan authorities in March and transferred to the United States for prosecution on charges related to alleged corruption. The meeting focused on the ongoing political crisis in Venezuela and the United States’ continued support for Guaidó’s claim to the presidency.

Background

Maduro’s government has been in power since 2013, following the death of Hugo Chávez. The United States has refused to recognize Maduro’s legitimacy, instead endorsing Guaidó after massive protests in 2019. Guaidó’s arrest earlier this year raised concerns about the opposition’s ability to challenge Maduro’s rule.

Next Steps

Trump said the United States will maintain pressure on Maduro’s regime and continue to support Guaidó’s diplomatic efforts. No specific policy actions were announced during the meeting, and officials said further discussions are pending.
