Two-thirds of the recent increase in Spain’s regulated electricity tariff, the PVPC, stems from additional operational costs incurred by the grid operator, Red Eléctrica (REE). Data indicates that these adjustment services, implemented to bolster system security following an April 2025 blackout, added nearly 10 euros per megawatt-hour to consumer bills in September.
This surcharge occurred alongside rising international natural gas prices, which have climbed above 80 euros per megawatt-hour due to disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz. While total electricity costs rose by 15.03 euros per megawatt-hour before taxes in September, the specific operational adjustments accounted for 9.86 euros of that increase. Fixed costs, such as grid access tolls and taxes, remained unchanged during the period. #Energy #Spain #Electricity #Economy
