France and Germany Seek to Extend Combustion Engine Car Sales Beyond 2035

France and Germany have reached a common agreement to allow the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles in the European Union past 2035. The deal seeks to support the German automotive industry, which had lobbied against the proposed ban. In exchange for this concession, Germany has committed to backing French proposals that prioritize European-made vehicle components, aligning with broader policies to boost local production.

This bilateral agreement, announced Friday, aims to unblock negotiations on stalled EU legislation currently pending in the Council and the European Parliament. While other member states are not yet part of the pact, the move signals a potential shift in the bloc’s decarbonization agenda. The 2035 ban on combustion vehicles was previously considered a cornerstone of European climate policy.
