Actor Javier Bardem received a lifetime achievement award at the Rome Film Festival on Wednesday. The Spanish performer accepted the honor while addressing the cultural influence of the film industry during the ceremony.
Bardem stated that cinema possesses the capacity to unite people across different backgrounds. During his acceptance remarks, he also commented on broader sociopolitical issues. The actor warned that when individuals abdicate their civic responsibilities, it creates a vacuum that allows authoritarian figures to rise. He specifically referenced historical and contemporary leaders, including Benito Mussolini, Adolf Hitler, and Benjamin Netanyahu, as examples of the consequences of such political inaction.
