Harvard University has begun using a digital replica of former professor David Shrier to deliver entrepreneurship lessons online. The avatar, dubbed “Davatar,” mimics Shrier’s appearance and voice, allowing students to interact with the virtual instructor at any time. Shrier, now teaching at Imperial Business School in London, said the technology ensures his name, image and likeness remain under his control after a prior dispute where his former employer continued to use his recorded videos without compensation.
Shrier hired a lawyer to remove the unauthorized content and later agreed to create the AI-driven version. The university says the avatar can answer questions, provide feedback and simulate classroom dynamics, aiming to expand access to its curriculum. Critics note the move raises questions about intellectual property and the future role of human educators.
