Spain’s major labor federations announced a general strike on November 11 to protest housing conditions. The Confederación Sindical de Comisiones Obreras (CC OO), Unión General de Trabajadores (UGT), General Confederation of Labour (CGT), Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT), the Union of Actors and Actresses, CO.BAS, Intersindical and the Confederation of Tenants’ Unions filed the strike request with the Ministry of Labour on Monday morning.
The groups urged citizens to stay home and refrain from work on that day, describing the action as “a strike of the streets” rather than a traditional labour dispute. No criticism was directed at larger unions, marking a unified front across the Spanish labour movement.
Organisers hope the shutdown will pressure authorities to address rising rent prices and inadequate housing policy. #HousingStrike #Spain @CCOO_ES @UGT_es @CGT_es
