Unmarried couples with children in Spain will be eligible for widow’s pensions provided they can demonstrate two years of continuous cohabitation. The provision is included in a draft royal decree scheduled for approval by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday. This change eliminates the previous requirement for a formal marriage or registered partnership to access survivor benefits.
The proposal, developed by the Social Security administration, aligns the rights of informal partners with those of married couples. The government previously discussed this measure with labor unions and business associations during negotiations regarding temporary disability reforms. Once approved by the Cabinet, the decree will take effect immediately. However, it must receive legislative validation within one month to remain in force. #Spain #SocialSecurity #PensionReform
