Spanish Government Approves €180 Million Housing Grants for Tension Zones

Spain’s Council of Ministers approved two decrees on Tuesday allocating €180 million in subsidies for housing projects in areas designated as “tension zones.” The measures aim to boost the supply of affordable homes and ease access for university staff and students across the country.

One decree targets the construction and renovation of low‑cost housing in regions where demand outstrips supply, while the other provides financial assistance to university professors and students seeking accommodation. Officials said the grants will be distributed to local authorities and housing agencies that meet eligibility criteria.

The government expects the funding to increase the stock of affordable units and alleviate pressure on rental markets in the identified zones. Critics note that implementation details remain unclear.
