Sixteenth-Century ‘Banquet of Psyche’ Tapestry Begins Restoration in Florence

Florence’s Opificio delle Pietre Dure has taken charge of restoring the 17th-century tapestry “Il banchetto di Psiche” from the Bargello museum. The work, moved to the workshop in Palazzo Vecchio this week, marks the first phase of a multi‑year conservation project.

Conservators will clean, re‑weave damaged sections and stabilize the silk fibers before the piece returns to public display. The tapestry, depicting a mythological banquet, is considered a key example of Baroque textile art in Italy.

Officials said the restoration aims to preserve the work for future generations while allowing scholars to study its original techniques. The project is funded by regional cultural authorities and will conclude with a public unveiling.
