Spain’s Digital Services Save Citizens Up to One Week Annually, Survey Shows

Spain’s leading insurer Línea Directa released its first Digitalisation Barometer on Wednesday, reporting that Spaniards estimate saving up to a week each year by handling transactions online instead of visiting offices in person.

The study surveyed a cross‑section of consumers who increasingly use mobile banking, virtual assistants and other digital tools for routine tasks such as booking a tow truck. Respondents said digital channels reduced the time spent on paperwork, travel and waiting.

According to the barometer, the shift toward digital services has accelerated rapidly, with many public and private entities expanding online platforms. Users highlighted convenience as a primary benefit, noting that they can complete procedures from home or on the move.

Key Findings

The report identified several trends:

  • On average, participants believed they saved between four and seven days per year by avoiding physical visits.
  • Mobile banking was the most frequently cited digital habit, followed by virtual assistants for scheduling services.
  • Older respondents reported the greatest perceived time savings, while younger users valued speed and accessibility.

Context and Implications

Spain has been modernising its public administration and private sector services, aiming to cut bureaucracy and improve efficiency. The findings align with broader European efforts to digitise citizen interactions, especially after the pandemic spurred remote solutions.

Línea Directa plans to use the barometer data to advocate for further investment in digital infrastructure and to promote consumer education on available online options.

Why it matters: The estimated weekly time savings reflect a broader transformation in how Spaniards manage everyday affairs. Faster, digital processes can boost productivity, reduce congestion at service centers and support economic growth, trends that are relevant to the Middle East and Egypt as they pursue similar digital‑government initiatives.
