Artificial intelligence weather models accurately forecasted the severe April 2024 rainfall in Dubai up to eight days before the storm, according to a study published in Science Advances. Researchers found that two AI systems, GraphCast and AIFS, correctly identified the timing, location, and intensity of the event. A third model, FuXi, also predicted the storm but underestimated the total precipitation.
The study highlights how AI can predict rare weather events even when historical data for a specific region is limited. Researchers suggest the models utilized “spatial transfer,” applying patterns learned from extreme rainfall events in other parts of the Northern Hemisphere. The mid-April storm caused widespread infrastructure damage and five deaths, with insured losses estimated at $3 billion. #AI #Weather #Dubai #ClimateScience
