Egypt Reports $2.8 Billion Balance of Payments Surplus for Fiscal Year 2025/26

Economic Performance Report

The Central Bank of Egypt announced a $2.8 billion balance of payments surplus for the 2025/26 fiscal year, a significant recovery from the previous year’s $2.1 billion deficit. Increased foreign investment drove the improvement despite a wider current account gap.

  1. Capital Inflows: The capital and financial account saw net inflows of $23.2 billion, up from $10.2 billion, largely due to an increase in foreign direct investment to $18 billion.
  2. Current Account Deficit: The current account deficit rose to $22.5 billion, impacted by a 27.1% increase in the merchandise trade deficit, which hit $64.8 billion.
  3. Key Offsets: Remittances from Egyptians working abroad increased by 29.6% to $47.3 billion, while tourism revenues grew 10.3% to $18.4 billion.
  4. Suez Canal Impact: Suez Canal receipts rose 21.6% to $4.4 billion, supported by increased vessel traffic.
