Suez Canal Authority, Hapag-Lloyd Discuss Restoring Shipping Services

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd met in Ismailia to discuss increasing vessel transits through the canal. SCA Chairperson Osama Rabie and Hapag-Lloyd’s regional head for Southern Europe, Juan Pablo Richards, held talks to address the gradual resumption of shipping services amid regional security concerns.

Expanding Maritime Cooperation

The SCA stated its readiness to accommodate various shipping services, citing ongoing efforts to modernize fleet operations and infrastructure. Rabie expressed interest in the full return of Hapag-Lloyd’s operations, emphasizing the canal’s role in maintaining global supply chains. Currently, two Hapag-Lloyd services operate through the waterway to and from Asia. Richards stated that the company expects to resume additional transits in the near future.

Hapag-Lloyd continues to monitor security developments in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to guide its sailing schedules. Richards acknowledged the improved services provided by the SCA and noted the company’s commitment to maintaining its relationship with the authority.

Training and Infrastructure Development

Discussions also covered potential collaboration in maritime training and infrastructure. The two parties explored links between the SCA’s Maritime Training and Simulation Academy and the Damietta Alliance Container Terminal, also known as Tahya Misr 1. Hapag-Lloyd is a major investor in the terminal, and proposed training programs could involve ship captains.

Why it matters: The Suez Canal remains a vital artery for international trade and a primary source of foreign currency for Egypt. Increased transit volume from major global carriers like Hapag-Lloyd is critical for the canal’s revenue stability and for alleviating disruptions in global supply chains caused by ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Red Sea.
