European Investment Bank Commits Over €1.2 bn to Egypt’s Water Sector Since 1989

The European Investment Bank (EIB) said it has financed more than €1.2 billion for water projects in Egypt since 1989, targeting wastewater treatment, sanitation and water‑quality upgrades.

October 25, 2026 – Cairo Water Week Opening

EIB Vice‑President Gelsomina Vigliotti announced the cumulative investment while opening Cairo Water Week 2026. She said the bank will keep supporting Egypt’s drive to strengthen water security, improve wastewater management and protect communities from climate‑related risks.

Key Projects Highlighted

The Alexandria West Wastewater Treatment Plant, slated to serve about 1.5 million residents, and the Helwan Wastewater Project, aimed at nearly 2.1 million people, were cited as flagship efforts. In the Nile Delta, the Kafr el Sheikh and Kitchener Drain schemes are expected to benefit roughly 400,000 and 200,000 people respectively through better sanitation and water‑resource protection.

Integrated Approach Emphasized

Vigliotti described the Kitchener Drain Programme as a model of integrated environmental infrastructure, combining wastewater treatment, solid‑waste management and drain rehabilitation. She argued that coordinated investments across linked systems generate broader community benefits than isolated facilities.

Link to Water‑Food‑Energy Nexus

The EIB welcomed Egypt’s Nexus of Water, Food and Energy initiative, which links efficient irrigation, improved wastewater reuse and sustainable energy to reinforce water security and agricultural output.

Global Water Financing Context

Through its Water Resilience Programme, the EIB aims to raise water‑related financing to €15 billion for 2025‑2027 and mobilise up to €40 billion worldwide. Its Water Forward initiative targets water security for 300 million people by 2030, contributing to a broader goal of reaching one billion beneficiaries.

Where Things Stand

The EIB continues to prioritize safe water, sanitation, drought and flood resilience, and innovation such as smart water networks and nature‑based solutions in Egypt. Ongoing funding is expected to expand the reach of existing projects and support new integrated schemes.
