Indian Entrepreneur Shifts Disability Narrative from Welfare to Business

Mallikarjuna Iytha, who faced systemic barriers due to an 88% locomotor disability, has launched an initiative supporting over 2,000 entrepreneurs with disabilities across India. His organization, the Inclusive Divyangjan Entrepreneur Association (IDEA), aims to reposition people with disabilities as economic contributors rather than welfare recipients.

Overcoming Institutional Barriers

Iytha’s professional trajectory was influenced by early academic discouragement. During his secondary schooling, educators advised him to abandon science studies, citing his physical condition as a limitation. He encountered similar obstacles while pursuing doctoral research in environmental science, where peers questioned his capability to conduct field work. Later, in the corporate sector, Iytha observed a pattern where individuals with disabilities were hired for entry-level roles but frequently excluded from leadership positions.

These experiences led Iytha to pursue a career in the development sector, eventually serving as president of the Fair Trade Forum-India. During his tenure, he focused on connecting marginalized producers with market opportunities. Drawing on these experiences, he established IDEA in 2019 to address the specific economic hurdles faced by people with disabilities.

Expanding Entrepreneurial Access

IDEA operates on a model that provides comprehensive support throughout the business lifecycle. The organization offers entrepreneurship training, mentoring, financial assistance, and guidance on market access. Rather than focusing solely on welfare, the program aims to provide the resources necessary for individuals to build and scale their own businesses.

The initiative has expanded rapidly since its inception. In December 2024, Iytha received a national award recognizing the organization’s work with over 1,000 entrepreneurs. By March 2025, the New Delhi-based non-profit reported supporting more than 1,500 entrepreneurs across 11 states.
