India’s Linguistic Diversity Drives Global Voice AI Innovation

Indian market challenges are shaping the future of global voice artificial intelligence, according to Sneha Roy, co-founder and COO of Murf AI. By addressing complex linguistic requirements, infrastructure constraints, and cost factors, developers are creating technology that may eventually serve international markets.

Adapting to Complex Speech Patterns

Speaking at the TechSparks 2026 conference, Roy stated that voice AI must accommodate natural speech patterns rather than forcing users to adapt their language. Systems currently struggle with common Indian interactions, such as mixed-language inputs—combining English with regional languages—and unique pronunciations of local addresses.

Roy compared this development to previous technological adaptations. Google Maps introduced offline functionality to navigate limited connectivity, while Netflix launched mobile-only plans that expanded to 78 countries. Similarly, Uber piloted cash payments in Hyderabad before adopting the model elsewhere. Roy argued that if voice AI can succeed in the complex Indian market, it can scale globally.

Optimizing for Speed and Cost

Beyond linguistic nuances, voice agents must operate within strict time constraints to remain functional. Roy noted that a complete voice-agent pipeline, covering speech recognition, language models, and speech generation, typically requires a response time between 500 and 800 milliseconds.

To meet these demands, Murf AI developed a model called Falcon 2. This system is designed to function on a wide range of graphics processing units (GPUs), reducing reliance on high-end hardware. The company reported that this approach keeps text-to-speech latency below 100 milliseconds, even accounting for network delays. This engineering strategy aims to improve cost efficiency and performance for businesses handling millions of calls monthly.
