MakeMyTrip Reports Q2 Profit of $1.8 Million Amid Currency Headwinds

Nasdaq-listed MakeMyTrip reported a consolidated net profit of $1.8 million for the quarter ending September 30, 2027. This marks a recovery from a loss of $5.7 million during the same period in the previous fiscal year. The company attributed the turnaround to improved operating profit and reduced net finance costs.

Revenue for the quarter reached $235.2 million, a 2.5% increase from the $229.3 million recorded in the second quarter of fiscal year 2026. Adjusted for constant currency, which removes the impact of exchange rate fluctuations, revenue grew by 11.2%. The company noted that the Indian rupee depreciated approximately 10% against the dollar compared to the prior-year period, affecting reported revenue figures.

Market Performance and Segment Growth

Gross bookings for the quarter rose by 11.3% to $2.72 billion. On a constant currency basis, gross bookings increased by 20.9%.

The company’s financial performance varied across its primary business segments:

  • Hotels and Packages: This segment remained the largest revenue contributor at $107.1 million, a decline of 1% from $108.2 million a year earlier.
  • Bus Ticketing: Revenue in this sector increased by 16.6% to $39.1 million. Gross bookings for bus travel grew 20% to $435.3 million, supported by a 24.7% rise in ticket volume.

Economic Factors Impacting Travel

MakeMyTrip reported that international long-haul outbound travel from India remained subdued during the quarter. The company stated that elevated fuel prices contributed to higher airfares, while the weaker rupee increased the total cost of overseas travel for consumers. Strong demand for domestic travel partially mitigated these challenges.

Why it matters: The results highlight how currency volatility and inflationary pressures on fuel costs continue to shape the travel industry in emerging markets. For investors, the company’s ability to maintain profitability through strong domestic demand despite international headwinds offers insight into shifting consumer travel patterns in the region.
