Edited Japan, a new snack curatorship in Shinjuku, lets shoppers sample treats from across Japan for a total of 1,000 yen.
September 2023 – Store opening
Edited Japan opened on the first floor of the Marui Annex department store in downtown Tokyo’s Shinjuku district. The shop positions itself as an “editor’s selection” of regional sweets and savory snacks, offering more than 100 items that represent every Japanese prefecture.
Store concept
The retailer focuses on everyday snacks rather than premium gifts. Items are sold in single‑serving portions, allowing customers to try a variety of products without buying bulk boxes. Prices typically range from 100 to 200 yen per item.
Shopping test
During a recent visit, a reporter set a hard budget of 1,000 yen (about US$6.30) and aimed to purchase snacks from as many prefectures as possible. By tracking costs while shopping, the reporter assembled a selection from six prefectures that totaled 995 yen.
Sample selection
The first item was Hokkaido’s Dining Kitchen Corn Soup, a powdered mix sold for 130 yen. Though classified as a soup, the product is marketed as a snack and is commonly found in vending machines during colder months.
Current status
Edited Japan continues to stock a broad range of regional treats, maintaining its emphasis on authentic, affordable snacks that reflect local daily life.
Why it matters:
The shop provides a low‑cost way for residents and tourists in Tokyo to experience Japan’s culinary diversity without traveling nationwide. By offering single‑serve portions at budget prices, Edited Japan makes regional foods accessible to a wider audience, supporting local producers and enriching the city’s food‑culture landscape.
