President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Cairo to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and broader regional instability. The discussion focused on finding peaceful resolutions to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Africa while addressing long-standing calls for international institutional reform.
Advocating for UN Reform
During the meeting, Al-Sisi emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive overhaul of the UN Security Council. The Egyptian president stated that reforms are required to better reflect current global power dynamics and to increase representation for African nations. He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the UN Charter and multilateralism, noting the country’s significant contributions to international peacekeeping missions and its role as a host for various UN agencies.
Guterres acknowledged Egypt’s diplomatic efforts, particularly regarding the Palestinian issue. He commended Cairo’s work to facilitate humanitarian aid into Gaza and maintain the ceasefire. However, the Secretary-General expressed deep concern regarding ongoing violence in the West Bank. He urged the international community to take immediate action to stop violations against Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank, asserting that lasting regional peace is impossible without a just settlement to the Palestinian question.
Addressing Regional Stability
The talks extended to conflicts in Sudan, Libya, and the Horn of Africa, with both leaders stressing the importance of peaceful settlements and adherence to international law. Regarding tensions in the Gulf, Guterres praised Egypt’s role in preventing further escalation. He identified opportunities to secure freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and address Iran’s nuclear program through diplomatic channels.
