Meta unveiled a new AI tool called Meta Business Agent at the TechSparks 2026 conference, aiming to turn WhatsApp into a round‑the‑clock storefront for direct‑to‑consumer (D2C) brands.
The service, presented by Piyush Vaidya, Enterprise Sales Specialist for India, will allow retailers to answer product questions, recommend items and guide shoppers through purchases without leaving the messaging app. Businesses can link their product catalogs, set response tones and decide whether replies are manual, AI‑generated or fully automated.
Meta says the agent can retain conversational context, so customers returning to a chat do not need to repeat earlier details. For complex issues, the conversation can be escalated to a human representative.
Research cited by Vaidya indicates that 91% of users abandon the process after adding items to a cart. By enabling instant answers via WhatsApp, Meta hopes to reduce cart abandonment, improve personalization and lower support costs.
How the platform works
Brands can promote their WhatsApp presence through contact cards shared in chats, call‑to‑action buttons on WhatsApp Status ads and a dedicated search feature for AI‑enabled businesses. Once a user initiates a chat, the agent can display catalog items, collect lead information through forms and schedule appointments.
Payments are already live on WhatsApp in India and Brazil, allowing customers to complete transactions without exiting the app. The tool also supports follow‑up messages to remind shoppers of abandoned carts or suggest related products.
Next steps
Meta plans to roll out the Business Agent to additional markets after the initial launch in India and Brazil. Brands interested in the service must configure the agent’s parameters and integrate their product data.
Why it matters: The AI‑driven WhatsApp agent gives D2C brands a way to stay reachable beyond regular hours, potentially reducing lost sales in markets where WhatsApp is a primary communication channel, such as the Middle East and Egypt.
