European Officials Emphasize Tech Collaboration with India at TechSparks 2026

European diplomats and technology officials gathered in Bengaluru on October 15 to advocate for stronger cross-border partnerships between India and Europe. During a panel discussion at the TechSparks 2026 conference, representatives from Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Denmark argued that international cooperation is essential for developing critical technology, rather than pursuing isolated national independence.

Balancing Strategic Sovereignty and Global Ties

The discussion addressed the global trend of countries investing heavily in domestic semiconductor, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure sectors. Peter Winther-Schmidt of the Consulate General of Denmark in Bangalore stated that nations must distinguish between security-sensitive sectors and areas that thrive on interoperability.

“We have to avoid equating strategic sovereignty with technological independence,” Winther-Schmidt said. He pointed to the European Union’s digital identity wallet, which utilizes India’s technology stack, as a primary example of successful collaboration.

Jacobus Johannes Veerman, Consul-General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Bangalore, echoed this sentiment. He rejected isolationist policies in favor of strategic partnerships, emphasizing that countries should prioritize identifying which technologies are critical for their own ecosystems while remaining open to external alliances.

Facilitating Research and Innovation

Dr. Angela Honegger, CEO and Consul General of Swissnex India, detailed how Switzerland is actively connecting its research infrastructure with Indian startups. Swissnex, which operates as a science consulate, facilitates student exchanges, joint research funding, and bilateral startup programs.

Honegger highlighted the company Suind, which integrates artificial intelligence, drone technology, and agriculture, as a successful model of cross-border integration. The firm, founded by Swiss and Indian entrepreneurs, maintains operations in both countries to leverage regional strengths.
