Egypt Health Minister Reviews Hospital Upgrades and Research Initiatives

Ophthalmic Institute Reports High Patient Volume

Patients seeking urgent eye care at the Memorial Institute for Ophthalmic Research found upgraded facilities this week as Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar inspected recent renovations. The institute treated 12,085 emergency cases and completed 411 surgeries between January and September. The facility’s surgical wing includes 45 beds and seven operating rooms.

Abdel Ghaffar emphasized the institute’s dual role in clinical care and scientific advancement. The center recently secured a renewed license from Egypt’s Supreme Council for Medical Research Ethics. According to the ministry, researchers at the facility have published more than 43 papers this year, alongside ongoing international training programs for medical staff.

The minister also visited the pediatric ophthalmology center to observe the “Small Eyes, Big Future” initiative. This program, run in partnership with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, provides early eye screenings for children residing in orphanages.

Facility Expansions at Al-Galaa Hospital

At Al-Galaa Teaching Hospital, the minister inspected a new economic neonatal unit featuring 12 incubators, three operating rooms, and specialized pediatric wards. During the tour, Abdel Ghaffar advocated for natural childbirth practices when medically safe for both mother and infant.

Operational efficiency emerged as a priority during the visit. After reviewing the dental department, the minister directed staff to increase doctor staffing levels. He also ordered the rapid deployment of an electronic patient tracking system, which officials expect to be active within 48 hours. Construction teams received instructions to accelerate development on two additional floors, with progress reviews scheduled over the next month.

Why it matters: These upgrades reflect the Egyptian government’s broader efforts to modernize public healthcare infrastructure and improve patient throughput. The integration of digital tracking systems and the focus on specialized pediatric and ophthalmic care are critical steps in expanding access to essential medical services for vulnerable populations.
