The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a memorandum of understanding with artificial‑intelligence firm Sarvam to promote AI use across the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.
August
At Sarvam’s inaugural developer conference, the company presented its AI ecosystem, covering models, compute infrastructure, coding agents, voice tech, document intelligence, workplace apps and hardware such as smart glasses. The startup said its Anvaya platform is aimed at defence and intelligence uses, including on‑premise deployments.
MoU Announcement
The MoD posted on social media that the HQ Integrated Defence Staff and Sarvam AI have signed the MoU to cooperate on AI applications, research, knowledge management, training and decision‑support for the three services. The agreement marks Sarvam’s first entry into the defence sector.
Market Outlook
Inc42’s “India’s Defence Tech Startup Ecosystem Report 2025” projects the defence tech market to rise from $7.6 billion in 2025 to $19 billion by 2030, a 20% compound annual growth rate. The report estimates AI will account for 48% of the market by 2030, up from 28% in 2025, and notes that 89% of Indian defence‑tech startups already incorporate AI.
Current Status
No details on specific AI projects, deployment schedules or financial terms have been disclosed. The partnership is expected to deliver AI‑based solutions that meet the armed forces’ requirements while ensuring data sovereignty and competitive pricing.
Why it matters: The MoD‑Sarvam deal reflects India’s push for indigenous defence technology and could accelerate AI integration in military operations. For regional observers, the move signals a shift toward homegrown, secure AI systems in a sector traditionally dominated by foreign suppliers.
