Indrajaal Develops AI-Powered Counter-Drone Technology for Critical Infrastructure

Indrajaal, a defense technology startup, is deploying artificial intelligence-powered systems to detect and neutralize hostile drones. The company aims to protect military installations and critical infrastructure from aerial incursions as drone technology becomes more accessible.

September 2019

Houthi rebels launched a swarm of low-cost drones against Saudi Aramco oil facilities. The attack disabled nearly half of Saudi Arabia’s oil production, highlighting the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to inexpensive aerial vehicles. Kiran Raju, the founder of Indrajaal, identified a growing need for defensive technology to counter similar threats along India’s borders.

2020

Raju founded Indrajaal as a spinoff from Grene Robotics, a company he established in 2006 to focus on autonomous defense applications. The startup began developing an integrated architecture to manage drone threats, moving beyond traditional standalone jamming systems.

Current Operations

The company utilizes an AI-powered platform called SkyOS, which integrates data from radars, radio-frequency sensors, and cameras to identify aerial threats. Once a target is detected, the system can deploy countermeasures such as signal jamming or autonomous interceptor drones. The startup has raised approximately $5.5 million in funding from investors including India Accelerator and Finvolve.

Market Outlook and Security

Indrajaal operates within India’s defense technology sector, which is projected to reach a market value of $19 billion by 2030. The company is currently deploying its systems at critical installations, supported by government initiatives promoting self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

Why it matters: The rise of low-cost drone warfare poses a significant security challenge to energy infrastructure and military sites worldwide. For nations in the Middle East and beyond, the ability to integrate AI-driven detection and neutralization systems is becoming essential to maintaining regional stability and protecting vital economic assets.
