Egypt Reaffirms Support for Sudan Sovereignty Amid Ongoing Conflict

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Sudanese counterpart, Mohiuddin Salem, on Monday in Cairo to discuss ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis in Sudan. During the talks, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s commitment to Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and reconstruction efforts.

The meeting occurred on the sidelines of the third round of the 2+2 consultation mechanism, which involves the foreign and irrigation ministers of both nations, according to Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ambassador Nader Zaki.

Addressing the Sudanese Crisis

Abdelatty emphasized the necessity of a Sudanese-led political resolution to the current conflict. He called on neighboring countries to respect Sudan’s sovereignty and security, while urging them to refrain from interfering in its internal affairs. The Egyptian minister also expressed support for international efforts aimed at ending the violence and restoring stability.

Abdelatty stated that Egypt remains committed to backing infrastructure development and reconstruction in Sudan. He also noted the importance of building upon the outcomes of the four-party consultative summit previously hosted in Alamein, which focused on regional security and development.

Bilateral Relations and Cooperation

Sudanese Foreign Minister Salem acknowledged the historical ties between the two nations during the discussions. He expressed appreciation for Egypt’s ongoing support for Sudan’s national institutions, territorial integrity, and efforts to restore peace.

Both ministers confirmed their commitment to continued coordination and cooperation across various sectors. The talks highlighted a mutual intent to maintain close diplomatic channels as the conflict persists.

Why it matters: As a direct neighbor, Egypt plays a pivotal role in the stability of Sudan. Continued diplomatic engagement and support for Sudan’s sovereignty are central to Egypt’s regional security strategy, particularly regarding the Nile Valley and the prevention of further instability spilling across its borders.
