UN agency reports sharp rise in violence against women in Gaza

In a cramped shelter in northern Gaza, a mother whispered to her teenage daughter that the war had forced many girls into early marriages. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said its latest assessment confirms a steep increase in violence against women across the enclave.

UNFPA officials said the agency’s data show a surge in reports of physical, sexual and psychological abuse since the conflict intensified last month. The agency also highlighted a “severe escalation” in both early and forced marriages, noting that families cite economic hardship and insecurity as drivers.

Humanitarian workers on the ground reported that shelters and clinics are overwhelmed with women seeking help, while local authorities struggle to document cases amid ongoing hostilities. The UN agency urged the international community to prioritize protection measures and to fund services for survivors.

Palestinian officials condemned the rise in gender-based violence, calling it a war crime. Israel’s military spokesperson said the allegations would be investigated, but offered no details.

UNFPA warned that without immediate intervention, the trend could deepen, entrenching cycles of abuse and limiting prospects for post‑war recovery. The agency called for urgent action to safeguard women and girls as the conflict continues.
